5 questions before you
buy
March 2004
[1]What's the lowest
temperature YOU'LL FACE?
This is where it pays to
be a pessimist. Get a bag rated 5 to 10 degrees warmer than you think you'll
need.
[2]Which bag is warmer?
Temperature ratings are a
good guide, but loft is better. Compare bags side-by-side; if the temp
ratings are identical, put your faith in the fat one. If you sleep really
cold, go 10 degrees warmer.
[3]Do you toss and
turn, or sleep like a mummy?
Bags come in different
shapes. Get the right balance between efficient insulating (less space) and
comfortable wiggle room (more space). For restless sleepers, a few extra
inches at the shoulders (girth) can make the difference between snoozing all
night and feeling straight-jacketed. Likewise, if you need less elbowroom,
you can get a narrower cut, saving weight.
[4]Down or synthetic?
Get down fill if low
weight and low bulk are your priority. Tradeoff: If it gets soaked in the
field, you're shivering. Go for a synthetic fill if price is more important,
or you expect to see a lot of wet weather.
[5]How many bags do you
want in your closet?
For many hikers, nighttime
lows can vary by as much as 60 degrees from season to season. You'll save
weight in the summer and prevent cold nights in the winter if you invest in
more than one bag.

Use and Maintenance of
Sleeping Bags
Use
- Remember that sleeping bags must always be isolated from the ground
with a good mattress/airbed.
- In low temperatures, it
is better to wear a hat, since your head loses the highest percentage of
body heat.
- A
sleeping bag does not need to be folded to make it smaller inside its
sack. It is sufficient to insert it, starting from the bottom of the bag
and holding the storage sack in one hand. Compression tapes allow the
volume to be reduced so that the bag can be placed horizontally inside a
backpack.
¡@
Fillings
Down: a
traditional choice for excellent heat insulation and minimum size. The
down - more valued - to feather ration is the ID for a down sleeping bag
(e.g. 80/20 means 80% down and 20% feathers). Heat insulation, measured
by the CUIN unit, is defined as the loft height, in inches, of 30 g of
down. A SEPARATE CHAMBER construction guarantees more even down
distribution.
Hollow fibre:
for the
utmost comfort and heat insulation, less absorption of moisture and
extremely easy washing. Manmade fillings facilitate the diffusion of
body heat in the sleeping bag, retaining it uniformly. The fibres are
arranged in independent LAYERS to form barriers against the cold.
Use
Temperatures
As well as its laboratory tests, Ferrino also uses the Institut Textile
de France tests. These are performed using a detection system to
identify temperature values and the way in which they vary with levels
of transpiration towards the exterior, in line with the European
standard EN13537. Temperature data for the comfort range offer a large
safety margin. The values indicated refer to a person wearing a sports
suit and sleeping in a closed environment (tent), on a mattress/airbed.
In any case, physical characteristics and individual ability to adapt to
the cold are always determining factors that are difficult to predict.
For this reason, the values given may be easily exceeded or in some
cases, seem to be too extreme.
When choosing a sleeping bag, we recommend that you consider the values
given for the comfort range.
The extreme value takes into account an excellent level of technical
preparation and knowledge of personal resistance to low temperatures.

- Extreme
Temperature:
an extreme temperature level that can be
withstood by an average female body without the risk of the physical
damages caused by hypothermia.
- Comfort Limit Temperature:
the lowest temperature limit within which a male body, in a curled up
position, can reach a thermal balance and not feel cold.
- Comfort Temperature:
an extreme temperature limit within which a female body in a relaxed
position can reach a thermal balance and not feel cold.

Maintenance and
washing
Wash by hand or machine wash at 30¢X using a delicate cycle. Do not dry
clean. Dry in the open. Keep the sleeping bag out of its storage sack
when not in use.http://www.ferrino.it/html/prodotti/uso_e_manutenzione/uso_sacchi.php |
